friend?

she is a friend

the word lingers on my lips

it has weight and permanence

yet it can take flight

changing shades of blue

at times a deep navy that is hard to distinguish

it is heavy with thought and deep in meaning

and then it turns a turquoise blue,

clear like a coastal sea revealing schools of fish,

until it changes once again

this time sky blue with a brightness and a joy

that lifts you from the depths of despair

the thoughts of my friend

can bring me to the edge of freedom

the peace and comfort

to be seen

to be loved

simply for being

me

But when I am not seen

I am brought to the brink

A deep hole

looking into the darkness

seeing nothing

Uncertainty

falling without anything

to catch

Me

She is a friend

Because I call her by that name

It is me

my viewpoint

that defines her

In herself, she is a woman

Making her way in the world

Independent of

Me

If she is not my friend

She still is

The shades of blue fade

But her colours will continue to

Illuminate the world

I will watch from a distance

And see the permanence of that word

Friend

Crumble

Leaving behind

just her name

Powerful poem, Giovanna. I have friends of all shades of the blue you describe, and ones who have also faded and crumbled. You’ve captured it!

This is a powerful tribute to both the water we all treasure and friendships that ebb and flow in a similar way. Your colors and images have me smiling which is a good thing this morning.

This is so beautiful. I love how you suggest shifts with different shades of blue. This line was one (among many) that stood out to me: “If she is not my friend/She still is”. It brings up a lot of poignancy for me.
